Health & PE

Health and Physical Education
  • In Health and Physical Education students develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours that enable them to take increasing responsibility for maintaining their own physical, social, and emotional health. The course focuses on assisting students to:
  • Maintain good health and live a healthy lifestyle
  • Understand the role of physical activity in ensuring good health
  • Engage in physical activity
  • All students in Years 7-10 study Health and Physical Education as a core subject. Year 10 students also have the opportunity to choose semester based studies from a range of electives, and to undertake VCE Physical Education units 1&2
  • Courses are based on the CSF II with a growing focus on the following Victorian Essential Learning Standards Dimensions:
  • Movement and physical activity
  • Health knowledge and promotion


Years 7 & 8

Physical education

  • Year 7 Students undertake a range of activities including motor skills, aquatic safety, dance and gymnastic movement, sport, and a walking program.
  • Year 8 Students extend the skills learnt in Year 7 through a range of activities including personal fitness, athletics, sport, and a walking program.

Health Education

  • Year 7 Students complete a range of units including team building, hepatitis B and immunization, healthy living, sport research, friendship and peers, values and beliefs, choices and influences, smoking and health, and changes during puberty.
  • Year 8 Students build on the knowledge acquired in Year 7 through a range of units including understanding health, community health and fitness needs, time management and homework, puberty and sexuality, decision making and goal setting, independence and responsibilities. loss and grief, teenage issues and healthy diets.


Years 9 and 10

Physical education

  • Year 9 Students undertake a range of activities including personal fitness, football codes, sports training, and racquet sports and a walking program.
  • Year 10 students undertake a range of practical activities aimed at further developing their levels of fitness, health and skills.

Health Education

  • Year 9 Students complete a range of units including sexuality – relationships, reproduction, contraception, sexual safety, and decision making - conflict resolution, risk-taking behaviour, and illicit and legal drugs and their effects on the human body.

 

Physical education and Health education Electives

  • Year 10 students may choose one or more of the following electives:Up and Go – Applied Fitness including principles of training, personal training programs, weight training, running and walking for fitness, and injury management.
  • Fizzigirls – Girls in Physical Activity including aerobics, circuit training, weight training, dance and movement, issues in exercise and health for girls, theoretical concepts of exercise.Mind and Body – An Alternative to Exercise ad Health Studies including mental health studies, yoga, meditation, tai chi, stress relief, body image issues.Sports Leaders – Coaching and Administration in Sport including coaching education, officiating, umpiring and refereeing, equipment management, motivation, monitoring individual and team performance.


Victorian Certificate of Education

Three Health and Physical Education subjects are offered in VCE:

  • Physical Education, Outdoor and Environmental Education, and Health and Human Development
  • The year 11 and 12 courses follow the study design. It is expected that the dimensions of Health and Physical Education flow through into the implementation of these courses in the classroom.


Extension Activities

  • As part of the Health and Physical Education course extension activities are also offered within the classroom.

SPORT

  • The Health and Physical Education learning area runs the school sporting program. This program acknowledges the physical and social benefits that sporting activities bring to students. As well as improved health and fitness students gain enjoyment, greater confidence, skills in being in and leading teams, and the ability to take both winning and defeat in an appropriate manner. Teams from Years 7-12 compete against other schools in the region in a range of sports. These include athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, netball, swimming and diving, tennis, volleyball, football, cross country running
