News Headlines from Forest Hill College
Tribe Pride on Display
The College's first big event for 2010 was the Swimming Carnival - a day of fun in and by the pool, friendly competition and Tribe pride. Students and staff alike eagerly donned the reds, blues, greens and yellows of their Tribes, making for a rainbow display by the poolside. Students took part in races and fun events such as the cork scramble and the noodle relay (it is a sad thing to admit that my own Red Tribe engaged in acts of cheeky sabotage during this event) - almost every student in the College was in the water at some point! The highlight of the day was clearly the staff vs. students race, with everyone gathered around the pool to cheer the competitors on. The competition was intense, but the staff won the day, leaving College students to dream of a different outcome at next year's re-match.
Sizzling Sausages and Buzzing Minds
The College welcomed parents, guardians and families to a barbeque on a lovely Summer evening in February. Our Year 10 Peer Support students were on hand to guide our visitors through the shady courtyards and into the classrooms where they were able to take in the sights of the freshly-renovated Year 7 area and the brand new science rooms.Teachers and students held mock classes and participated in activities whilst other staff were busy preparing the barbeque feast. All in all, the event was a fantastic introduction to the College for our new parents and guardians and was a great success.
The Best (Breakfast) Bar in Town!
At Forest Hill College, we know how important it is for students to start their day of learning with a good, healthy breakfast. This is part of the inspiration for the College's Breakfast Bar.The Breakfast Bar runs every Tuesday and Thursday morning, providing a healthy and filling start to the day for all students. A fifty cent entry fee allows students to feast on cereal, toast and juice, as well as the occasional special treats such as pancakes or French toast. Delicious fruit smoothies are a specialty of the Breakfast Bar.
As well as providing a healthy start to the day, the Breakfast Bar allows students from all year levels to get to know each other in a casual, welcoming environment. We hope to see you there soon!
Study Smart
A crucial part of the life of a Forest Hill College Year 12 student is Study Camp. Every year, our students head out to a special area at Deakin University where they will spend two days learning vital skills that will help them to survive their final year of secondary school. The camp is conducted by teachers and the Wellbeing team and is also designed to make sure the students are aware of the support structures that exist in the College to help them along every step of the way.The study camp also enables students to get to know each other a litlte better and to break down the barriers between groups, as well as providing them with a chance to interact with College staff. Despite the heat endured by all at the camp, it was an amazing success and has ensured that our Year 12 students have started on the right path in 2010.
New Students, New Year
One of the main aims of the College's renowned International Students Program is to make sure our international students feel as welcome and comfortable as possible. We want them to feel at home when they're at school. In honour of this, the College hosted a dinner on the 14th of February to celebrate Chinese and Korean new years. All students were invited, giving them an opportunity to get to know each other (and the staff) a little better while enjoying an amazing feast.Students brought friends, families and host families with them as they celebrated the new year. Many members of staff were also present, ensuring that everyone had a wonderful time as they ate, talked, played games and indulged in a little bit of karaoke.
