Science

Science education aims to stimulate students curiosity about the world they live in, and to seek to understand the forces and processes that made it that way.

Students learn how scientists work, develop an understanding and respect for the environment, complete experiments and present and analyze data.

The course assists students to develop an understanding of the role of science in their world and confidence in writing and speaking about science.

All students in Years 7-9 study Science as a full year core subject based on the CSF II with a growing focus on the following Victorian Essential Learning Standards Dimensions:

Science knowledge and understanding: This dimension enables students to develop an understanding of the similarity and diversity of living things and their relationship with each other and the environment; concepts related to matter – its properties and uses, and substances created through chemical change; concepts of energy and force; and the place of the Earth in time and space and the interaction between the Earth and its atmosphere.

Science at work: Focuses on understanding how people work with science. Through their own investigations students gain insight into science as a career and the relationship between science, technology and society and possible futures.

Year 10 students undertake a semester of science and can select from a range of electives.

They also have the opportunity to undertake VCE Biology units 1&2.

Year 7 and 8

Year 7 students learn, and have practical experience of, laboratory safety and the correct use of scientific equipment. They undertake activities in:

·      Chemical Science (Mixtures and States of Matter)

·      Biological Science (Classification; Cells; Plants)

·      Physical Science (Forces in Action; Light and Sound)

·      Astronomy

Year 8 students further develop their science skills and undertake activities in:

·      Matter (Elements; Chemical Reactions; Acids and Bases)

·      Electricity (Circuits; Series and Parallel)

·      Forces (Gears and Pulleys; Simple Machines)

·      Food Science (Nutrients; Food Chemistry; Digestive System)

·      Astronomy (Night Sky; Moon Phases)

·      Ecology (Food Webs and Ecosystems)

·      The Human Body (Respiratory and Circulatory System; Diseases; Immune System)

Year 9 and 10

Year 9 students refine their skills and knowledge of scientific experimentation and research, and undertake activities in:

* Chemical Energy

* Matter

* Electricity and Electronics

As part of the Senior School Year 10 students undertake a semester of General Science and can select semester based electives from Science in Industry, The Human Machine, and Robotics/Space Science.

They are introduced to the formal groupings of science Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Astronomy, Earth Sciences undertaking activities in:

* Chemistry (Atomic Theory; Periodic Table; Radiation; Chemical Properties and Reactions)

* Physics (Invisible Waves–Sound, Electromagnetic, Radio, Fibre Optics, Communication)

* Biology (Classification; Fossil Records; Extinction; Evolution; Diversity)

* Genetics (Dominant and Recessive Genes; Mitosis and Meiosis)

Victorian Certificate of Education

Four Science subjects are offered in VCE:

* Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Psychology.

The year 11 and 12 courses follow the study design. The dimensions of Science flow through into the implementation of these courses in the classroom.
