Student Leadership
Leadership at the College
Developing and fostering leadership skills and competencies amongst students is a key feature of the College. We have four College Captains taken from Year 12 and four taken from Year 9. This provides opportunities across the entire College for access to leadership development programs.
With the introduction of a Tribe (House) system we have been able to introduce male and female captains and vice vaptains for each Tribe. This adds to the extensive leadership opportunities for students at the College.
All student leaders meet with the Student Leadership Team, comprised of Ms Naomi Carson and Ms Linda McGloin on a regular basis. IMPACT meets fortnightly, while College Captains, Sports Captains, Tribe Captains and Home Group Leaders meet once a month.
A range of leadership opportunities are available for all students, including:
- College Captains
- Sports Captains
- IMPACT Representatives
- Tribe Captains
- Home Group Leaders
- Music Captains
Nomination is required for the posts of College Captains, Senior Sport Captains and Tribe Captains. In order to obtain one of these positions all students are required to complete the appropriate form (including the Key Criteria), sit an interview with a panel and present a speech to the College body.
IMPACT (formerly known as the Student Representative Council) is the body that represents the students' point of view and communicates that view to the College Council, the Principal and various College committees. Elected students contribute to decision-making, discuss educational issues, help with fund-raising for community welfare and College projects, participate in leadership activities and represent the College publicly.
Tribe Captains are responsible for the organization, participation and team work efforts within their Tribe. Throughout the year, our College offers many opportunities for students to earn points towards their Tribe. These activities include:
- College Athletics Carnival
- College Swimming Carnival
- Performing Arts Tribe Festival
- Debating
- Academic Competitions
- Lunchtime Sports Competition
Students from each home group are nominated as Home Group Leaders at the beginning of the year. They support the class teachers and Year Level Managers by assisting with daily and organisational tasks. Home Group Leaders are responsible for the daily student bulletin, flags and the college magazine.
All Year 9 students are invited to train as Peer Support Leaders at the end of term 4 and to support the Peer Support Program as Year 10 students during Term 1 in the following year.
Further opportunities for student leadership occur during the year, including Open, Information and Presentation Nights, Primary School Visits, Grade 6 Orientation Program, Musical and Theatrical Productions, Student Assistants, Sports coaching and umpiring, Parent-Teacher-Student Interviews, Cross-Age Tutoring, Student Guides and Theatre Technicians. As well students are given responsibility for a number of tasks that ensure the smoothe operation of the College.
