Student Wellbeing
Forest Hill College strives to improve opportunities and outcomes for all students. Central to this is the provision of a healthy, supportive and secure environment, and the development of strategies that reduce vulnerabilities, increase coping skills and assist students to become more resilient. Student Wellbeing is viewed as a shared responsibility between school, home and the community.
All teachers share responsibility for student welfare, endeavouring to provide successful experiences for all students and a safe, secure and supportive environment where a sense of belonging and wellbeing are strengthened. The College administration, Year level managers, Student Wellbeing coordinator and an Adolescent Health nurse provide support to the classroom teacher.
Programs are put in place across the school to develop resilience, social skills, conflict resolution and problem solving. These include 'Peer Support' for Year 7 students; student awards presentations; leadership training and experience; and mediation groups.
A Student Code of Conduct provides students, staff and parents with a clear-cut outline of the responsibilities and rights of all students and helps to promote a cooperative and positive environment throughout the College.
Chaplaincy
Forest Hill College has a full time Chaplain who is available to the whole community in providing pastoral care, counselling as well as support in spiritual and faith development. The chaplain’s responsibility emphasises impartially and is an advocate for students. The Chaplain focuses on the student as a whole person encouraging them to develop an informed worldview and to explore their spirituality, to strengthen student beliefs and value systems, equipping them with the ability to be positive and active members of the College and Whitehorse community. The Chaplain works closely with the teaching staff to help the students be equipped and prepared for the learning process.
The Chaplain offers one-to-one counselling services to students, families and staff- including issues such as grief and loss, identity (self esteem and gender), relationship issues (at school and home), self harm and anger management. All issues are dealt with sensitivity and confidentiality.
The Chaplain is also involved in co-ordinating Parent information sessions which include topics such as communicating with adolescents, stress management, how to encourage your child without nagging etc... Breakfast Bar is also offered twice a week and for a nominal fee students eat as much as they like whilst connecting with their peers and having fun. What great way for them to start the school day!
