Work Education and Work Experience
Work Education is a significant aspect of a comprehensive education that focuses on student learning and career pathways. Through work education students learn about the world of work and begin to develop those skills and competencies required for working life.
Work education helps to prepare students for making career related decisions, by encouraging students to start thinking about their own interests, abilities and school achievement in relation to their chosen career and future in the world of work.
A key component of work education is the Work Experience program that provides the opportunity for students to work full time in a selected workplace for periods of up to two weeks as part of their Work Education. This enables them to experience a realistic work situation, develop an understanding of how their relation to the world of work, and gain a greater knowledge of themselves and their abilities.
All students in year 10 take part in work experience. Students in Years 11 and 12 are also able to undertake work experience, if they request it, during one of their holiday vacations.
Students undertake some work related tasks in Year 9 commerce, especially in relation to their participation in the 'Real Game'. However, the major component of work education takes place in Year 10 commerce classes. Students participate in class discussions, activities, role-plays, job interviews, telephone applications, letter writing, interpretation of job advertisements, and work experience as previously mentioned. Students follow up their Work Experience with the completion of an assignment, diary and a `talk'.
